West Milford Health Department has a substantial supply available all year long for the pneumonia vaccine. When people with diabetes get the flu, it can cause more than just aches and pains. It can be life threatening. People with diabetes and/or other chronic diseases are considered at high risk for serious complications of flu which can lead to pneumonia which puts them at a high priority to receive the pneumonia vaccine. Exposure to flu can last until the end of May. The West Milford Health Department advises people with diabetes or chronic illness to have a pneumonia vaccination and to keep their pneumococcal vaccination current. The fee is $25 for those who have insurance or an HMO. If you have Medicare Part B as your primary insurance, there is no cost to you. If you are under 65 years of age, please call the nurses at 973-728-2725 to have your situation evaluated and to schedule an appointment. If you have received the pneumonia vaccination after the age of 65, you are up-to-date. You only need to get the immunization once after 65 and then you are protected for the rest of your life.
