For the love of books

Four teams of third and fourth graders at Marshall Hill School read assigned books that were predetermined by a national Battle of the Books committee. When the club began, 30 students participated but half eventually dropped out, leaving 15 students who had the stamina to finish. Once the students read all the books, they each had to write a summary for four of the books, including title, author, characters, setting, solution and main events. After many months of weekly meetings, the students assembled and had the “Battle Of The Books.” The four teams took turns answering questions which involved giving the correct title and the author for each book to earn points. The Master of Ceremonies was librarian Terry Sandford, and the guest scorekeeper was literary specialist Karen E. Norman. Teams were rewarded with First and Second Place medals, a Battle of the Books t-shirt and a certificate of participation, which will be presented to each student at the Marshall Hill School Awards assembly in June. Fourth grade team 3 won first prize, team 4 came in second. Third grade team 1 won first prize, team 2 came in second. Not only did the students show great knowledge of the books they read, they also proved they could cooperate as a group and exhibited excellent sportsmanship. The school hopes the event will encourage more reading, especially in the upcoming summer months.
