LEESBURG, FL Former West Milford Mayor John C. Mulligan died on Saturday, March 4 in Leesburg, Florida where he was vacationing. Mulligan was very involved in the West Milford community. From 1995 until 1999 he served on the town council, and for the last two years as the mayor. He also served on the West Milford Economic Development Committee, West Milford Board of Building Standards, Ramapo Mountain Snowmobile Club, and was a founding member of the Greenwood Lake Watershed Management District, and served several terms as executive director. From the late 1950s until the early 1980s he ran the Old Homestead/Greenwood Lake Boat, Swim and Tennis Club in Hewitt. Mayor Joseph DiDonato and council expressed their sadness at the news of the death of the former mayor at this week’s council meeting. Councilman James Warden said of Mulligan, “He was a guardian of Greenwood Lake and deserves our respect and condolences.” Councilman Phil Weisbecker said, “He had a tremendous heart for this township; he had a tremendous heart period.” Weisbecker also raised the idea of renaming Belchers Creek to honor Mulligan saying, “I know you’d ask why name something that’s polluted after John but John got things fixed. With his name on this it would be sure to get done.” A memorial service will be held at Ringwood Baptist Church on Friday March 10 at 7:30 p.m
