WEST MILFORD Just in time for back to school Girl Scout Troop 96 from West Milford partnered with the United Way of Passaic County for Backpacks for Kids, a program that provides local students in need with brand new backpacks filled with school supplies. Six girl scouts from the troop volunteered several hours of time at the United Way office, filling backpacks and delivering them to a local school and woman’s shelter. “In addition to helping us achieve our Silver Award, taking part in Backpacks for Kids enabled our troop to do something positive for kids our own age who are in need,” said Troop Member Kaitlyn Hamilton. “It feels good to know that we helped others.” The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest recognition a Girl Scout in grades 6 through 9 can earn. Some of the requirements include a project that benefits others in a meaningful way. This year, United Way of Passaic County distributed nearly 1,000 backpacks to youth in need, thanks to the generosity of Passaic County businesses, organizations, and residents. According to Yvonne Zuidema, United Way of Passaic County President, this was Backpacks for Kids most successful year yet. “In 2006, we were able to help more local youth prepare for academic success than ever before. Troop 96 is a great example of how caring organizations can make a huge difference in the lives of Passaic County residents. With dedicated partners like these, United Way of Passaic County is confident that Backpacks for Kids will have an even stronger 2007.”
