WEST MILFORD — The township recently received a grant of $31,908.75 from the Department of Environmental Protection. It is part of more than $9.5 million in Clean Communities funding for litter prevention and public education, adopt-a-highway campaigns and graffiti cleanups. The Clean Communities grant is an annual one which coincides with Earth Day on April 22. Bill Schug, who is with the West Milford Department of Public Works, said the township will use the money to provide supplies such as garbage bags, gloves and litter sticks to various civic groups who participate in litter clean up. The supplies are also available to anyone who has adopted a portion road in the township. In addition, the grant pays for tee shirts and a thank you picnic as well as environmental and recycling education programs in the schools. Passaic County received $35,494.14. Clean Communities legislation was enacted in 2002. The law imposes a fee on companies manufacturing products that generate litter.
