WEST MILFORD — West Milford High School’s Model United Nations team participated in the Annual Passaic County Superior Court Mock City Council Meeting which was held on May 4. This meeting was sponsored by the Passaic County Bar Association and the Passaic County Vicinage Minority Concerns Committee where the objective was to celebrate the legal system by having high school students of Passaic County participate in an actual city council meeting. They debated and decided on a teen curfew law. The students conducted the simulation before Judge James Rhode, a judge of the Passaic County Superior Court. The roles included: City Council n Tom Enering, Adrianna Hitchins, Margaret Mohrenweiser, Corey Van Clief, and Joseph Smolinski Jr.; Board of Education n Mathew Conlon, Christina Siesta, Kate Knatz, and Bill Goodheart; Police Department n Dan Poeschl; Students’ Rights Group n Joseph Bove, Heather Ryan, and Nicole Macheska; Community Group- James Bocchairo, and Antonia Gazetas. The students presented their views on a teen curfew law that stated, “It will be illegal for persons under the age of 18 to be out of their homes from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights. On Friday and Saturday nights, the curfew shall be extended until midnight. Violators will be fined $100. Young people, chaperoned by adults attending a planned community activity, or traveling to or from work, are exempt and will not be fined or penalized.” Once the meeting concluded, the mock City Council voted 5-0 in favor of the teen curfew. Students also had the opportunity to witness a new citizens swearing in ceremony which made Law Day a very appropriate time to see former immigrants become United States citizens. Greg Matlosz, advisor of the Model UN team and history teacher at the high school said, “First, I have to thank Councilman Joseph Smolinski and Board of Education President Midge Touw for taking time out of their schedule to help these students prepare for this meeting. Councilman Smolinski attended the meeting with the team and President Touw was able to attend a Model UN meeting after school to answer questions and sit with the students who represented the Board of Education. “As an educator and resident of West Milford, I am very proud to see the community and high school work together as a team to educate our students” Smolinski said.
