Highlanders head to the city

WEST MILFORD — The West Milford High School Band will once again take part in the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade in NYC. The band has marched for the last three years. The first two years they won second place in the visiting bands category and last year they pulled off a first-place win. The parade will be broadcast live on channel 4, Friday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Director of Bands, Dr. Brian McLaughlin is originally from El Paso, Texas and came to New Jersey in 1998. He received his bachelor’s degree at the University of New Mexico and his masters and doctorate at the University of Iowa. His settled in New Jersey to be with family. This is his second year at West Milford high School. There are 159 students under his direction, studying winds, brass and percussion. Forty-nine of the 52 students in the band have qualified for the New Jersey Area Band. Three students qualified for both the All Region Band and All State Orchestra. They are freshmen Stephen Summers, sophomore Keith Williams, and sophmore Mathew McLaughlin. Home-schooled Adam Alexander, sophomore, will play french horn in the All State Orchestra.
