JEFFERSON - As a special salute to the township's 2004 Bicentennial celebration, the Jefferson Township Bicentennial Committee will present a special program dedicated to the United States' most musical President, Thomas Jefferson. "Mr. Jefferson and his Music" with Eugene Roan and John Bulkhalter, known as the ‘Practitioners of Musick,' will perform at 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 2 in the municipal building's council chambers, 1033 Weldon Road here. Thomas Jefferson, the "Sage of Monticello", was ardent in his devotion to music. He owned numerous instruments imported from London and an extraordinary collection of printed music. The third president believed that music was indispensable to the fabric of culture and civilization; and in fact, it was "…a most delightful recreation." On May 2, a brief illustrated lecture will be complemented with a performance of music drawn from Jefferson's 1783 inventory of musical holdings. This performance of "Mr. Jefferson and his Music" is free and open to all, with seats on a first-come basis. This program is offered through the Horizons Speakers Bureau of New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
