West Milford Parks and Recreation will be sponsoring a Kidsafe Karate program this winter. The program will be offered on Monday afternoons, beginning January 9 and continuing until March 20 (no class Feb. 20) for a total of ten weeks. The program is designed for boys and girls ages 5 to 14. The program is designed to enhance self-esteem, self-discipline and safety awareness. Students are placed into classes according to age and ability. A black belt instructor teaches beginning, intermediate and advanced techniques for self-defense only. Self-discipline and defense, rather than aggressiveness are promoted. Weekly safety flyers focus on a wide range of topics including stranger and fire safety and more. Classes are fun and increase fitness and coordination. Classes will be held in the Hillcrest Community Center Gym. Enrollment in all classes is limited and is on a first come, first served basis. Classes offered are as follows: New students ages 5 - 8 will meet from 3:45 - 4:25 or 4:30 - 5:10; returning students ages 5 - 8 and new students 9 and up will meet from 5:15 - 5:55; yellow and orange belts all ages will meet from 6 - 6:40; purple belts and up will meet from 6:45 - 7:25. The cost for each ten week session will be $70 for West Milford residents and $80 for non-residents. Uniforms are not necessary, but are recommended. They will be available for purchase throughout the course. All uniforms come with a white belt and your child will be fitted with the proper size. Registration forms are available at the Parks and Recreation Office. For more information call 973-728-2860.
