West Milford — It’s known locally as Dead Man’s Curve. Early Sunday morning a Kinnelon man lost his life on this stretch of Clinton Road after he struck a concrete barrier on a bridge and overturned, landing in a stream leading to the Clinton Reservoir. Dominick J. Cropanese Jr., 65, the driver of the car, died about an hour later while waiting for a medivac helicopter. According to West Milford police Sgt. Stephen Singerline, they received a call just after midnight Sunday reporting a serious accident. Police determined that Cropanese was driving his 2004 Nissan Sentra southbound on Clinton Road when he struck the barrier located on a bridge. The car continued across the top of the barrier and struck a guide rail, then continued off the bridge and into the stream. The driver was thrown from the car and pinned under it as it landed on its roof. West Milford Fire Companies 1, 2 and 5 responded and extricated Cropanese, who was transported by West Milford First Aid Squad #46 to a landing zone at Paradise Knolls School to await a medivac helicopter where he died. The West Milford Police Crash Investigation Unit is investigating the accident. Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the accident or anyone with information about it to call them at 973-728-2802.
