WEST MILFORD Instead of the “Dog Days of Summer,” the summer of 2006 is known as the “Kitten Days of Summer” at the West Milford Animal Shelter. The shelter is currently caring for 41 kittens of various ages, sizes and colors. The one thing they all have in common is that they all need homes. That’s a lot of kittens to find homes for. Adoption rates are usually lower in the summer because people have vacation plans, parties and other activities and would not have the time to devote to introducing a new pet into their homes. Hopefully, now that many people have returned from their vacations and are starting to settle back into their normal routines the number of adoptions will increase. Many people call the shelter during the holidays looking to adopt a kitten but by that time most will have been adopted. If there are any kittens available at that time of year, they will be eight or nine months old. Now would be the best time for anyone considering adopting a kitten to visit the shelter. The shelter is open for adoptions Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday evening from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Their phone number is 973-728-2859. All of the kittens available for adoption have been tested for feline leukemia and have received the necessary inoculations for their age. Any kittens (or cat) over the age of six months has been spayed or neutered.
