West Milford Township Library Director Patricia Hannon recently joined over 200 library trustees and directors at the annual New Jersey Library Trustee Institute. This year’s theme, “Trusteeship: A Noble Calling” centered on legal issues important to trustees and focusing on helping trustees to become better advocates for their libraries. The institute was presented by the New Jersey State Library and its partners, the New Jersey Library Trustee Association and the New Jersey Library Association. It was founded on the fact that library trustees are entrusted with the welfare of an important institution capable of serving everyone in the community the library. Educating trustees is essential to creating highly effective boards that will be able to support the growth of library service and advocate for excellence as well as for funding support. Hannon convened a roundtable discussion on small public libraries. Other presentations covered the topics of library construction, planning for diversity, and library services for senior citizens. New this year was the first revised edition of the New Jersey Public Libraries: A Manual for Trustees which was distributed at the institute. Hannon was a member of the committees that wrote the original manual and worked on the revisions.
