West Milford - Police apprehended Erich Bujese, 44, after a chase through three towns with no injuries. Police received a report that Bujese was threatening violence against himself and family members. The report came in on Sunday, Aug. 3, at approximately 7:30 p.m., saying Bujese was operating a 1997 Ford Ranger pickup truck. West Milford Police immediately alerted surrounding Police Departments to be on the lookout for the subject and the vehicle. A short time later, Greenwood Lake, NY, police observed the truck traveling from their jurisdiction into West Milford on Lakeside Road. As the vehicle entered West Milford, Officer Jill Brickman attempted to stop it. The operator refused to stop and passed a police vehicle operated by Officer Greg Post, Jr. The two officers chased the truck south on Lakeside Road and onto the Greenwood Lake Turnpike (Rt. 511) towards Ringwood. The pickup truck pulled into a boat launch area for Monksville Reservoir, where the vehicle stopped in the roadway and the driver, Erich Bujese, exited the truck brandishing two 18” machetes. As he exited his vehicle, he threatened to harm himself and threatened the officers in a menacing manner, taunting and demanding them to shoot him. At one point, Bujese came towards Officer Post with one machete raised in a threatening manner, and then retreated. After a 10-minute standoff and dialogue, Officer Joseph Nevin, Greg Post Jr., Jill Bickman and Lewis Rose subdued Bujese. Other agencies assisting were Greenwood Lake and Ringwood Police, and NJ State Park Police. Authorities said the officers exercised great restraint and composure during an extremely difficult and tense situation and were able to subdue Bujese without any serious injuries. Bujese was taken into custody and evaluated at St. Mary’s Hospital in Passaic. He was charged with a number of criminal and motor vehicle offenses: eluding police officers in a motor vehicle, menacing and threatening a police officer/resisting arrest, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, possession of a weapon with the purpose of menacing a police officer, operating a motor vehicle under the influence; passing in a no passing zone, careless driving and reckless driving. Bujese was remanded to the Passaic County Jail on $50,000 bail with no 10 percent option, set by the Honorable Joseph Perconti, JMC.
