Chelsea resident's art chosen for statewide calendar

— A painting by Jim Selleck, a resident of the Chelsea assisted living residence in West Milford, has been chosen to be featured in the 2013 wall calendar published by the Health Care Association of New Jersey (HCANJ), a distinction that will circulate his work across the state.
Selleck, 77, a Chelsea resident since 2011, is a self-taught artist who has been painting for about a year. His painting of a King Charles spaniel, done from a photograph, was done in acrylic, a favorite medium. It will be displayed at the October annual meeting of the HCANJ in Atlantic City. The calendar will be distributed at senior centers, assisted living, retirement communities and other HCANJ member facilities and to all state legislators.
Selleck, a retired police officer for the New York City Police Deparment, originally from Brooklyn, still owns a home in West Milford, though he resides at the Chelsea. He has a son, two daughters and four grandchildren.
"You gotta keep busy," he said recently while in the Chelsea workshop where he helps out. He receives a lot of encouragement from the Chelsea's recreation staff, which helped him prepare his painting for entry into the calendar contest.
Another one of Selleck's paintings recently won third place in the Passaic County Senior Art contest.
