MORRISTOWN —The Center for Ministry and Spirituality at the College of Saint Elizabeth, 2 Convent Road, Morristown, N.J., is hosting its annual Summer Institute from July 8 to 20, 2013. The Institute brings together distinguished speakers and presenters for two weeks of morning (from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) and/or evening courses (from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.), which may be taken for credit or non-credit.
The two-week event also features several retreat opportunities. A twilight retreat entitled "The Spirituality of Aging" is scheduled for Wednesday, July 10 from 3 to 8 p.m. A midday Sabbath retreat entitled "The Soul of the Caregiver," will be held for all direct healthcare workers, support personnel and leaders on July 11 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Saturday retreat, "Your Next Big Thing, Facing your Next Step with Passion and Purpose," takes place on July 13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Another twilight retreat, "Who Do You Want To Be?," is scheduled for July 16 from 3 to 8 p.m.. The Saturday July 20 retreat, "From Student to Sainthood: The Spiritual Journey of Sister Miriam Teresa, SC," will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. followed by Mass in Holy Family Chapel.
Summer Institute Brings Together Leading Theologians and Scholars
During Week One, July 8 to 11, the distinguished Jesuit and clinical psychologist John J. Cecero will offer a four-day morning course, "Flourishing in Christ: A Psycho-Spiritual Approach." Cecero is an associate professor in the Department of Psychology at Fordham University. His primary teaching and research interests are in personality assessment and the role of spirituality in mental health. Father Cecero published “Praying through Lifetraps: A Psycho-Spiritual Approach to Freedom” through Resurrection Press.
During Week Two, from July 15 to 19, two courses will be offered: "Theology and the Arts" by visiting scholar Rev. Richard Fragomeni from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; "Jesus’ Table Manners for Breaking Bread and Building Community- How the Eucharist Calls Us to Live,” by Patrick McCormick from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Fragomeni is a priest of the Diocese of Albany, New York. He is associate professor of liturgy and homiletics and chair of the Department of Word and Worship at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. He is the author of many books and also serves as spiritual director at the Shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii, an Italian-American spiritual center in Chicago’s Little Italy.
McCormick is a moral theologian and professor of Christian ethics at Gonzaga University and a popular speaker on Catholic social teaching. He is the author of several books on Christian ethics, including "A Banqueter’s Guide to the All Night Soup Kitchen of the Kingdom of God and God’s Beauty: A Call to Justice." He writes a monthly column on Christianity and culture for U.S. Catholic.
Instituto De Verano
Along with the Summer Institute workshops, there will also be a workshop conducted in Spanish. Sister Verónica Méndez, RCD will lead a workshop "Espiritualidad Ignaciana, el Examen, el Eneagrama: Pozos de Fortaleza para el Ministerio Hispano," from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., July 8 through 11.
