Death of woman found under falls 'suspicious'

SHOHOLA — The police called the death of a woman found at the bottom of Shohola Falls on Monday "suspicious," and are asking the public for leads.

The Pennsylvania State Police at Blooming Grove were called to the falls, located along State Route 6 in Shohola Township, upon the discovery of Gail Dews, 56, from Wayne, N.J. Her body was located at the base of the gorge.

The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area’s High Angle Rescue Team, which has recently been accredited by the Mountain Rescue Association, assisted police with the rescue.

On Wednesday morning, a state Trooper stopped every car traveling on Route 6, just outside the entrance to the Shohola Falls trailhead, to ask drivers and passengers if they knew anything about the incident. The Trooper said he had no information about the case.

The Blooming Grove barracks was not giving out information Wednesday.

"I have no information to release to you," the spokesperson told the Courier.

Anyone who was in the area of Shohola Falls between 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 10, and 8:30 a.m. on Monday, March 11, and may have information, is asked to call the police at 570-226-5718.
