WEST MILFORD — In the wake of tragedy, like the bombing in Boston this week, many wonder what they can do to help. Whether there is a tragedy or not, blood is always needed. This Sunday, April 21, the Monthly Blood Drive is taking place at the First Aid Squad Building, by the library.
"To be honest, there's not much we can do right now for the people in Boston, except pray and send good thoughts their way," said Jim Gilligan, the coordinator of the Monthly Blood Drive, in an email. "The victims rushed to the hospitals needed the blood then, not hours later."
And that is why donating regularly, Gilligan added, is a way to help people in their situation and many others.
"Not all crisis and traumas are featured on the nightly news," he continued. "Everyday in all our communities, people suffer from accidents, burns, disease and trauma that is equally traumatic to them."
The Monthly Blood Drive is held to ensure blood is available when it's needed.
"Just about every hospital and blood collection agency in the US participates in a planned sharing system when a big (and little) crisis occurs," according to Gilligan.
And despite the serious nature of their mission, organizers keep it a happy and fun experience.
"That's why I'm asking you to donate this Sunday at the Monthly Blood Drive at the First Aid Squad Building," Gilligan concluded.
First timers are always welcome. What a great habit to start. Bring identification and eat before you donate.
The Monthly Blood Drive takes place on the third Sunday of every month at the First Aid Squad Building, 619 Ridge Road, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
