Give A Goat! - or 22 of them
BY PATRICIA KELLER
WEST MILFORD — Macopin Middle School’s Make a Change Club (MACC) held their sixth annual “Give a Goat Night” fundraising event on Friday, Jan. 29. This year, approximately 400 students, staff, and community members came out for the event, which features “Super Teams” comprised of staff members competing in some pretty wacky events, all to raise money for local, national and global charitable causes chosen by the MACC members.
Attendees paid $10 for an evening of amusing entertainment along with some delicious refreshments. Students that attended the event brought their enthusiasm to cheer on their teachers' teams, with some even donning their own “fan” version of super team uniforms for support. They eagerly awaited certain events with great anticipation.
“The students were well behaved and were excited to cheer on their favorite super team,” said Krista Provost, advisor to the MACC and organizer of the event.
The Super Teams then competed for team points in relay contests such as:
“Fire Suit and Shoot”- firefighter-gear laden basketball hoops contest
“Workout World/Crossfit Relay” -a fitness-overload obstacle course relay
“Chubby Goat”- members of each team fit as many marshmallows into their mouth in one minute
“Dizzy Bat” - sprint to the end of the gym, spin, jog back to the soccer ball and kick it into the goal
“Ninja Game” - make the correct Ninja-style move in slow motion to eliminate other players until only one is left standing,
“Whipped Cream and Bubble Gum Challenge” - two members of each team compete by getting a gumball located in a plate of whipped cream (no hands), and then be the first team with both members to blow bubbles with the gum
“Get-A-Goat Target Launcher” - teams use balloon launchers to launch a ball across the gym and hit a “goat” target
“Bubble Soccer Tournament” - two teams compete at a time in bubble suits to score a soccer goal
In the end, the final Give a Goat Night competition results were:
1st place - Revenge of the Nerds: A New Beginning(s),
2nd place - Army of One
3rd place - tie between The Highlanders and The Force
Provost said for the club’s local/national cause this year is the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The club donated $1,000 to "Light the Night," a fundraising campaign benefiting The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) and their funding of research to find cures for blood borne cancers. This contribution was particularly touching for Macopin Principal Mary Reinhold. Reinhold explained that her niece was diagnosed with such a disorder, and family members provided some information about this and the charity the night of Give a Goat.
As for the MACC global action, Provost said they will donate 22 goats this year through World Vision.
Provost said 45 staff members participated on the super teams this year. In addition to the super teams, staff members also prepared baked goods for the bake sale and volunteered their time to work the night of the event and help out. Parents from the PTA also helped out.
“It was an amazing event and a good time!” Provost said.
In addition to the staff, parent, and student volunteers, Lenny Bono of Maximum Sports Center in Ramsey donated the bubble soccer suits for the super teams and Mama's Pizza of Hewitt provided the pizza for the refreshments table.
“The MACC, Joe, and I cannot thank the staff enough for their generous help throughout the week and night to make this happen,” said Provost. “We truly have the best staff ever, and after events like this, it really makes me appreciate working here at Macopin.”
