— A 51-year-old Kinnelon man was found dead in a heavily wooded area of Apshawa Preserve last Saturday, according to West Milford Police.

Police responded to the area Saturday after being notified that the hiker had not returned. Police located the car, which belonged to the hiker, Bjoern A. Waalberg, in the preserve parking area.

West Milford Search and Rescue initiated a search of the area and located Waalberg’s Labrador Retriever, according to Lt. John C. Matarese. The dog had been with Waalberg. Searchers then found Waalberg in a heavily wooded area. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The case remains under investigation although police said it does not appear to be suspicious in nature.
