— A couple of weeks ago on Sunday, Jan. 20, it seemed like bulldogs were everywhere at the Pequannock Feed & Pet Supply dog park. Heather Maskley, Stephen and Erika Ryder, and Brian Kelly, all bulldog owners, met at the dog park for a fun, muddy visit. Other dogs visited their play group, but most eyes, it seemed were on the bulldogs. They were the hit of the park. After they romped through the mud, they were visited by an eight-week-old bulldog puppy named Sulley. His owner, Ed Reilly, came to visit Rambo, owned by the Ryders.

Bulldogs are one of the most popular breeds of dog, according to American Kennel Club registration statistics, in large part because of their lovable and gentle dispositions, not to mention the adorable wrinkles. They are known for their shuffling gait and massive, short-faced head. Bulldogs are medium-sized dogs who would love to be lap dogs.

According to AKC.org, bulldogs are said to have originated in the British Isles. The name "bull" was applied because of the dog's connection with bull baiting. The original bulldog had to be ferocious and courageous, and almost insensitive to pain. When dog fighting became illegal in England, fanciers set to the task of preserving the breed by eliminating the fierce characteristics. Within a few generations, the bulldog became one of the finest physical specimens with an agreeable temperament.

Bulldogs are considered excellent family pets because of their tendency to form strong bonds with children. They are gentle and protective.

At the dog park, they were a fine sight to see. Fun was had by all, dogs and owners.
