WEST MILFORD — Tuesday, Nov. 6, is Election Day. All registered voters in the township may vote for president of the United States, United States senator, a member of the House of Representatives, a member of the state Assembly, three members of the Board of Chosen Freeholders and two local council members.
On the local level, West Milford will have two new council members in January. On the Democratic ticket, Row A, are David Ofshinsky and John Richards. For the Republicans on Row B are Vivienne Erk and Mike Hensley. Statements from all four candidates appear on pages 2 and 3 in this week’s Messenger.
On the county level, six candidates are vying for three seats on the Board of Chosen Freeholders.
Democrat Joseph R. Raich faces off against incumbent Republican Betty Lou DeCroce in the 26th Legislative district for the unexpired term in the state Assembly. DeCroce took over the seat after her husband, Alex DeCroce, died suddenly in January.
Republican Scott Garrett faces a challenge from Democrat Adam Gussen for the fifth Congressional district seat in the House of Representatives.
Democratic United States Senator Robert Menendez looks to keep his seat as Republican Joe Kyrillos challenges him.
And of course the presidency of the United States is up for grab. President Barack Obama and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney are running for the nation’s top office.
In addition, there are two state-wide questions on the ballot.
The first question asks the electorate to authorize the state to issue $750 million in bonds to provide matching grants to the state’s colleges and universities. Money from the grants will be used to build and expand university facilities.
The second question, if approved by voters, would create a constitutional amendment allowing contributions to be taken from justices’ and judges’ salaries for their employee benefits, including health coverage and pensions.
