At 12:01 a.m. on Thursday, June 14, the mayor of West Milford emailed residents with the announcement that she is selling her home and moving to South Carolina.
Here is the announcement of Bettina Bieri:
"Announcement to Constituents:
"It has been my privilege and honor to serve as your Mayor since 2008.
"As many residents know, I first ran for Mayor in 2007 because I wanted to be sure that I could fully commit myself to that office without negatively impacting my family.
"Prior to then, my children were in school and I understood the need to balance my priorities.
"For the past 11 years I have proudly watched my children graduate college, launch successful careers, move out of town and begin their married lives.
"With your support, trust and encouragement, during this time I have also been able to devote myself to the important role of Mayor.
"Life is an ever-changing journey, and I am excited to share with my constituents that my life has come full circle.
"Before the end of this year, I will become a grandma and my focus will shift back to my top priority, my wonderful family.
"I plan to be an accessible grandparent and am grateful that my children have encouraged this involvement.
"To that end, I will be moving to South Carolina so that I can be close to my family.
"I share all this with you, my constituents, because soon you will see a “for sale” sign in front of my house. While the exact timing has yet to be determined, I do know that I will not be seeking re-election next year.
"Furthermore, should a vacancy occur, something I neither anticipated nor expected, the statutory process will guide us accordingly. All of this is contingent upon the sale of my house.
"In the meantime, I will continue to do the very best job I can as your Mayor with appreciation for your continued support.
Bettina Bieri
Mayor
West Milford Township"
