Pine Island Black Dirt Farmers Market opens June 16

PINE ISLAND — The Black Dirt Farmers Market begins its second year on Saturday, June 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and will continue every Saturday through Sept 29.

The market is sponsored and operated by the Pine Island Chamber of Commerce, a non-profit community organization.

Its new location is the old Jolly Onion parking lot at the intersection of County Route 1 and Glenwood Road in Pine Island.

The market will feature a variety of local products including fresh locally grown fruits and vegetables; grass-fed beef and pork; plants; hanging baskets; herbs and flowers; cupcakes, muffins, cookies, pies; prepared foods; homemade beef jerky; local eggs and honey.

Chumley BBQ also will have a booth at the market.

The Black Dirt Farmers Market also will host a variety of arts and music happenings throughout the season. A featured performance by Black Dirt Dance students, as well as music performed live by local musician Theo Michelfeld will kick off opening day on June 16.

The chamber also plans to continue its first year’s tradition of featuring other non-profit community partners each week as well. The Richard J. Rudy Memorial Fund will be the featured community partner on June 16.

“We are very excited to bring the bounty of our local farmers and growers to the community with this weekly open air market,” Chamber President Marlene Caraballo said in the press release announcing the opening. “Our mission is to promote local agri-commerce, foster community spirit and gathering, and to attract shoppers and visitors to our hamlet. Building on our first year of the market, we are confident that this new, more visible location will help the market continue to grow.”
