Positive Parenting classes offered

| 20 Feb 2014 | 12:03

After 23 years of providing parenting workshops to at least two generations of West Milford parents, Positive Parenting will hold its final seven workshops beginning Feb. 27, 2014. The final classes will be held at the Newfoundland United Methodist Church on LaRue Road, in Newfoundland and will run on consecutive Thursdays, from Feb. 27 through April 10, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. The series is free.

Tom Palermo, the facilitator and professional parent trainer, is asking all past participants to come to the final workshops to share their experiences and insights with the new parents attending.

Positive Parenting has a great history and connection with West Milford and West Milford CASA. It was in 1991 at the request of William Zester, the CASA chairman at the time, that Palermo create a series of parenting workshops for the parents of West Milford. Although he had taught parenting for many years prior as a director of Children’s Programs, it was this request that formally established the company of Positive Parenting. Since then, Positive Parenting has grown to train thousands of parents and professionals and is utilized in all boroughs of New York City by multiple mental health agencies. Palermo has also had the opportunity to work privately with parents throughout the country and has had a direct effect on many children’s lives. All this support, going to thousands of families, due to one man’s vision, one man’s request, and a small allocation of dollars from a government grant.

The final seven class series will cover one complete subject each meeting, allowing parents to attend only those classes that their hectic schedule permits. The sessions will address such issues as: how to stop yelling, effective disciplining, relationship building skills, quality teaching techniques, setting goals for self and child, achieving compliance, and quality modeling skills. Each class will allow time for questions that are specific to your needs.

Positive Parenting is an approved DYFS, Foster and Adoptive Services Parent Resource program as well as an approved program by the New York Office of Mental Health Services. For more information, call 973-853-5500 or email tom@positiveparenting.tv.
