Photo provided by Bob Hopper
West Milford resident Bob Hopper took some beautiful pictures of butterflies this year, according to his wife Joan Hopper, but this one stands out. This Eastern tiger swallowtail butterfly landed on one of the Hoppers' sunflowers, making for a lovely photo. The Eastern swallowtail butterfly is native to eastern north America and is one of the most familiar butterflies in the eastern United States. It flies from spring to fall, during which it produces two to three broods. Its wingspan measures 3.1 to 5.5 inches. The male is yellow with four black "tiger stripes" on each forewing. Females, like this one pictured, may be either yellow or black; the yellow females are similar to the male but with a conspicuous band of blue spots along the hind wing.
