Name-: Jessica Rose "Jessi" Barker

Age: 13
Grade/School: 8th Grade/Macopin Middle School

Activities: Girl Scouts, Gymnastics, Art club, Yearbook club,

This week we Take Five with eighth grader Jessi Barker, a Girl Scout who has many other interests and dreams. Be sure to go to our website, westmilfordmessenger.com, for our bonus five with Jessi.

1. How did you get involved with Girl Scouts?

My Aunt Kelly was the co-leader of Girl Scout troop 577 and my cousin Mikayla was a part of it. I decided to give it a try in 3rd grade.

2. Who is your biggest inspiration?

My biggest inspiration is my neighbor, Judy Montgomery. Judy inspires me to make a difference and help out like she does even at difficult times. She is fighting cancer and still does everything she can to help everyone. Even though she is in a tough situation, whenever I see her she smiles and cracks a joke.

3. What do you do in your spare time when you're not involved in Girl Scouts?

When I’m not participating in Girl Scouts, I am practicing gymnastics, reading, writing, or in Art club or Yearbook club. Sometimes, I stay after school to help out at the Macopin library with my friends. We call ourselves the Library Squad.

4. What is your favorite book? Why?

My favorite book series is the Mortal Instruments series. The series is all about Clary, an average 15¬year-old girl, on mysterious and exciting adventures in the world of Shadowhunters that she never knew existed. She learns that she is stronger than she thought she was. Clary discovers her true self and makes new friends.

5. Share something no one knows about you.

Something a lot of people don’t know about me is that I have an anonymous instagram account about stopping animal abuse with 2,300 followers.

We think you'll have lots more followers now that people know about it. Keep up the good work, Jessi. And good luck to you in high school. You are one of the reasons West Mlford is so proud of its young people.

Bonus Five
6. What would most people be surprised to know about Girl Scouts?

Most people would be surprised to learn that Girl Scouts isn’t just sitting around earning patches. We help out the community, go on lots of fun trips, and help each other out.

7. Who is your favorite teacher of all time? Why?

My favorite teacher of all time is my 8th grade language arts teacher Mrs. Dickerson. She is a kind funny teacher who inspires me to read and write. She also inspires me and my classmates to be ourselves. She makes school fun.

8. Name three things you would bring with you if you were on a deserted island?

If I were on a deserted island I would bring my two dogs, Chewy and Shadow, and my favorite book series Mortal Instruments. I couldn’t live without either of my dogs or my books.

9. Share a favorite moment with your group?

My favorite moment with Girl Scouts is when we went on a trip to Rocking Horse Ranch. We got to ride horses on a trail through the woods and it was fun to hang out with the other Girl Scouts in my troop.

10. What are your longterm goals?

I have a few long term goals. For high school, my goals are to compete on the West Milford Gymnastics Team, and to get onto high honor roll. My long term goal in life is to become a marine biologist.
