The festival of lights
A menorah is now part of the holiday display at the West Milford Township Hall. Last week, Rabbi Mendy Gurkov of the Chabad of Upper Passaic County brought the six-foot tall menorah to the township after the council reconsidered its vote of the previous week and agreed to open up the display to all faiths. Although each light of the menorah was lit each day, beginning last Saturday with the first day of Hanukkah, Gurkov was planning to hold a ceremony, complete with traditional latkes and chocolate gelt, on Thursday, Dec. 13. Hanukkah celebrates the miracle that allowed a small group of Jews to light their menorah for eight days with only one day's worth of purified oil.
