WEST MILFORD — Tuesday evening, the class of 2013 graduated from West Milford High School. Among them, Melissa Townsend and Gianna Galioto were tops in this impressive class. The West Milford Messenger asked these high-achieving young women what is the key to their success. Their answers are below.

Melissa Townsend, valedictorian, West Milford High School class of 2013
“It is difficult for me to pinpoint the key to my success as there are a variety of factors. I believe the main foundation for my success is my belief in the principle that my work is a representation of myself. This idea, instilled in me by my parents, has encouraged me to reach the high standards that I set for myself on a daily basis. From a very young age, I have been a competitor; I like to put my best effort into everything that I do. For me, success has never necessarily been about me being the best one out there, but rather, it has been about being the best me possible. I have a lot of self-pride and like to set my goals high. I am a firm believer in Walt Disney’s phrase, “All dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.” If I believe in a cause or in an idea, it is important that I pursue it all the way, without the slightest hesitation. I believe that the opportunities in this world are limitless as long as I am willing to give them a try.
“My family has also played a very significant role in my desire to be successful. My grandfather, especially, was a huge believer in the importance of education. He took my schooling very seriously as he believed that it provides the foundation for my success. He was an esteemed chemist, a professor, and a loving grandfather who always encouraged me to be passionate about my work so that I can open a world of possibilities to be explored. I have grown up with the idea that I want to make my family proud. Although I know my entire family is proud of me for just being who I am in general, I have always been driven to be successful to give them a reason to be proud. I think this concept, again, stems from my own self-pride and determination. My family has given me the world and so much love and encouragement that I would be silly to not take advantage of the opportunities presented to me.
“The key to my success has always been dedication and the support of my parents. From the time I was younger my parents always instilled in me that I should give my all in everything I do. My parents have been there for me every step of the way for support and guidance. When I was younger, I would get home and do my homework right away with my mother by my side. It has become a helpful habit that has stuck with me throughout high school. I am so fortunate to have parents that are extremely supportive towards everything I do and also have taught me so many valuable lessons. My mother and father have taught me to be responsible, independent, and hard-working. To me, it's important that I do the best I can, not because I'm a perfectionist, but because I will always be satisfied with my accomplishments if I try my best. I am committed to everything I set out to achieve, but even if I don't reach my goals, I am never too disappointed because I know I've done my best.”

“When it comes to academics, being dedicated has been a challenge. Being committed to my school work has meant many late nights, countless extra credit assignments, and missed social opportunities. The most difficult times have definitely been during sports seasons when practices and games meant I wouldn't be home until at least five or sometimes eight o'clock at night. During field hockey and track, I would be trying to get work done on bus rides while others were relaxing or celebrating a win. I can remember one specific trip this year where I had my AP psychology book open every possible minute. Being dedicated to my academics has not always been fun, but it has given me a sense of pride for my work ethic and my abilities.”
