WEST MILFORD — Sandy is on the way.
By now, everyone knows this is a storm like no other. With winds expected to get up to 80 miles per hour, residents and officials are expecting power outages for sure. The Hillcrest Community Center will be open as a shelter for residents beginning at 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29. No closing date or time has been set.
Anyone requiring overnight accommodations should bring pillows, sheets and blankets, towels and toiletries with them to the community center, as well as medicines food and water.
If power outages do occur, people can bring their cell phones and laptops with their chargers to Hillcrest. Folks needing water may bring containers.
No pets are allowed at Hillcrest. Instead, pets can be brought to the West Milford Animal Shelter on Lycosky Drive.
Trash and recycling collections have been cancelled for Tuesday, Oct. 30 Tuesday and Wednesday collections will be made on Wednesday, according to Mayor Bettina Bieri.
According to West Milford's Fire Marshal Ron Svrchek, there were no road restrictions as of noon on Monday. Some trees were down in some areas but no road closures were reported yet.
The West Milford Police Department will update its facebook page on a regular basis and the township's Web site, westmilford.org, will also have the latest information during the storm. Pre-recorded emergency information is available at 973-728-2805. Emergency management lines - 973-728-2840 ad 973-728-2829 - will be staffed, Bieri said.
