Township readies for annual Beautification Day

Beautification Day is a true event in West Milford. More than 1,000 volunteers - sports teams, scout troops, neighbors - come out and clean up the township. There's lots of trash and recyclables discovered after the snow melts, so on Saturday, April 25, the township residents will be out in force to clean it all up.

The winning T-shirt designEvery year, the Beautification and Recycling Committee prints up T-shirts for all of the volunteers. The original artwork is chosen from Macopin Middle School art classes. This year's selection is a first, an equine theme, drawn by Cassie Owens.

"Every year it gets harder to pick one winner," said David Stires, Recycling Coordinator.

Cassie said she chose the design because she is into horses herself.

There were many beautiful pieces to chose from. The original drawings will hang in ShopRite all next week leading up to Beautification Day, as well as the week following.

Critters Against LitterAs reminders for Beautification Day, 4-H club president Arianna Bos has organized a "Critters Against Litter" campaign. Students from the Honors Art Society at West Milford High School offered to paint the little critters, that were cut out of plywood and have been placed throughout the township. There are eight in all reminding folks to stop littering in a clever way. The bear sign says "Your trash attracts me." Others include a chicken, rabbit, goat, pig, fox, goose and fawn.

Get out thereVolunteers are urged to call Stires at 973-728-2724 to sign up for Beautification Day. Choose a street or be assigned one. Trash and recycling bags and gloves, as well as that coveted T-shirt, will be supplied to all volunteers. Pick up the supplies Monday through Friday, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The actual clean up will take place from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 25. From noon to 3 p.m., there will be a picnic for all who participated at Bubbling Springs. Prizes will be awarded to the volunteers who found the most unusual, oldest and most valuable piece along the roadways. Door prizes will also be given out.

If it rains, the whole event takes place on Sunday, April 26.
