The New Jersey Council for History Education held its executive board meeting on earlier this month and named Kimberly Volz, a second grade teacher at Paradise Knoll Elementary School, as the first ever elementary social studies teacher ever to join the NJCHE. Volz will be representing elementary social studies teachers across the state in promoting the importance of history education at the primary level, preparing for the annual Princeton University Conference, executing the council’s after school history education seminars, and collaborating with university professors to shape the future of history education.

The NJCHE promoted Dr. Gregory Matlosz to the position of vice president.

“I am thrilled to not only have the opportunity to be a part of this council but to continue their mission of ensuring that history education has its part in New Jersey’s schools," said Matlosz. "It is a great honor to follow Dr. John Pyne, a former history supervisor of West Milford Township Public Schools, who established this council with his colleagues during the 1990s.”

The NJCHE, in collaboration with the West Milford Department of History and Social Sciences, will host its first history education workshop at Drew University on March 16. Drew University’s history professors will have the opportunity to discuss content with teachers from across the State of New Jersey. The topics will include: The Columbian Exchange, The Long Civil Rights Movement, and “An Gorta Mo`r” (The Irish Famine).
