VERNON — Hundreds of visitors and their canine companions came to the annual Barktoberfest and Walk-a-Dog-a-thon at the main beach area of Wawayanda State Park on Sunday.
The event was a fundraiser for the West Milford Animal Shelter. Prizes were given for those individuals, families, and groups that collected the most to benefit the shelter. Each dog that participated received a free goodie bag.
Every $10 raised will feed one homeless cat, kitten or dog for a week. Every $25 raised will provide a series of vaccinations for one homeless dog or one homeless cat or kitten.
There also were five contests: Happy Halloween, Best Dressed (dog and owner), smallest and largest dog by size, best trick, best behaved (basic commands) and pucker-up (best kisser).The West Milford Animal Shelter is maintained and managed by volunteers and every penny raised directly benefits the homeless shelter animals.
