Walk MS (Multiple Sclerosis) days in New Jersey are April 29 and 30, to raise awareness and research money to combat MS. This year, once again, Lyndsay Wright and her brother, Chris, will be walking with their team, "Demyelinate This," in the Walk MS event held in Ridgefield Park on Sunday, April 30. The event begins at 9 a.m. and the walk starts at 10 a.m.
"This is our eighth year participating in the Walk MS event, and I am going on nine years strong with my diagnosis," said Wright. "My brother and fellow MS fighter Chris, who was diagnosed in December 2015, will be right by my side for this year's event as we take one step closer towards finding a cure for MS."
She says she's doing really well and attributes it to "a positive attitude, never giving up, pushing forward and not stopping."
An early diagnosisBack in March of 2008, just when Wright was about to turn 18, ready to graduate high school and go off to college, she experienced numbness in her lower body and tingling in her feet. After testing, she was diagnosed with MS. The news was devastating, yet Wright had the strength of character to not allow MS to define her.
Progress madeResearch dollars do help. Recently,a new medication, Ocrevus, was released. It is the first for MS patients with primary progressive MS (PPMS) and has been shown to slow the progression of physical disability, and is also being used to reduce attacks in patients with relapsing-remitting MS, (RMS) the kind Wright has. Greater funding will go a long way toward finding better treatments and ultimately, a cure.
