West Milford Harry Clark, 47, of Hewitt, was arrested last week by the Passaic County Sheriff’s Department for allegedly impersonating Jim Geist, a Democrat who ran for council last year, on NJ.Com and then posting defamatory and ridiculing remarks. Clark is an elected representative to the County Republican Committee. The arrest came after a complaint from Geist, which was handled by the Sheriff’s Internet fraud division. Clark had also posted under the name JimboWarden and offered to sell the screen name after someone on the message board complained that it was an impersonation of current Democrat Councilman Jim Warden. Clark was released on his own recognizance and is scheduled to appear in West Milford municipal court on May 17. This arrest marks an ongoing struggle by the Democrats to stop the Republicans from using the Internet for personal (and often untrue) attacks. Just a month ago, former Republican Councilman Joe Elcavage made a public apology as part of a lawsuit settlement in which he took responsibility for a number of slanderous claims on a now-defunct, Republican-run Web site known as fleecingwestmilford.com.
