WEST MILFORD The students at Marshall Hill School recently had a week long reading celebration In honor of Dr. Seuss’ (Theodor Geisel) 102 birthday. Everyone from kindergarten through sixth grade participated in activities such as daily book quote contests, a “Poem In Your Pocket” day, “Royal Reader” visits, Green Eggs and Ham for lunch, a “Snuggle Up To a Good Book” day, and a Reading Is Fundamental book distribution. Marshall Hill School has been actively involved with the Reading Is Fundamental organization since 1979. Each year students receive three free books. Since its inception at Marshall Hill School, over 50,000 free books have been distributed. Students came to school wearing red and white which are the colors of the Cat In The Hat’s hat for Suess’s birthday observance and took a reading pledge. Since Dr. Seuss would have been 102 years old, the student who checked out the 102nd book at the media center won an armful of reading gifts. The culmination of the Six Hour Reading Club, sponsored by the Six Flags organization, resulted in 158 students receiving free passes to any Six Flag park. A PTA sponsored Family Reading Night was also held. Parents and children were given the chance to take part in a book swap, make bookmarks, have a quiet time to share a story and have refreshments. The was a contest for gift cards from Borders Booksellers, and the highlight of the evening was a performance of “Frog and Toad.” Marshall Hill School’s media specialist, Terry Sandford and several of his friends from SUNY Orange in Middletown, New York performed for everyone. The audience saw the characters of Arnold Lobel’s book, “Frog and Toad Are Friends” go from the page to the stage as the story was first read and then acted out. Before the show, the actors chose four students to become froglets and toadlets to help the story’s plot develop. Every student attending the show was given a Frog or Toad hat and an activity booklet to enrich their knowledge of frogs and toads, and foster further reading at home. A performance of A Year with Frog and Toad will be held at SUNY Orange in April.
