Statement: I am seeking my fifth consecutive term on the West Milford Township Board of Education, having been elected to the board of education for the first time in 1996. I have always worked well with my fellow trustees and we are a group committed to the students and staff of West Milford. I have led efforts over the years to install lighting on the high school football field. Through the generosity of my family’s business, Haskell Paving Inc., I have completed various paving projects in the district. In recent years, we have installed the asphalt pathways around Kilgallen Field, resurfaced the parking lot outside of the high school gymnasium, and paved a new parking area leading up to the high school football field. Haskell Paving Inc. donated the equipment, supervision, labor, and time for the projects. I have marched with the band in the St. Patrick’s Day parade and I have participated in numerous fundraising efforts on behalf of our boys’ and girls’ athletic programs in West Milford. The Hillcrest and Wallisch Property issues are about to be resolved and I support the resolution of both. I ask for your support on April 21. Statement: I am currently completing my first three-year term on the board, and serve as the current West Milford Township Public School board president. A lifelong learner and educational administrator affords me perspective of the balanced role and responsibility of school board members in making positive change. While serving as WMTPS board president, significant and excellent administrative transitions have been accomplished that have enhanced initiatives to the phasing in the new school district monitoring system, the New Jersey Quality Single Accountability Continuum (NJQSAC), which focuses on student improvement. Efforts working effectively with the town council have been an additional highlight of this year, as building a better partnership is in the best interests of all. Another change to our meetings has been with format, as we went from committee meetings on off-weeks to “Committee as A Whole,” which functions to share with the public more in-depthly the decision-making processes of the school board on issues of education, finance, personnel, and policy. While on the WMTPS board, I have maintained a consistent belief in the school community and township at large supporting student excellence for our students. I thoroughly enjoy the challenge of helping our administration, teachers, and all the staff of the West Milford school system deliver a thorough and efficient education. Our children deserve the finest education that we can reasonably afford and it is my goal to ensure that happens. The board of education has met many challenges during my tenure and we consistently achieve our goals. Our system is not without fault or problems but I assure the voters that I will continue to address those issues with my fellow board members and will work diligently to maintain our fine standards. John Aiello Age: 67 Education: Associate’s degree in business, Rockland Community College; 12 teaching credits Moody Bible Institute Occupation: Numismatis; owner of several private businesses since 1959: educational coin company, Adelo Corp. real estate properties, Sunrise Publications; All Nations Inc. coin minting company Family information: Four children, John, Jennie, and Jimmy, who have all graduated from West Milford High School, and four-year-old Gianni, who is in pre-school. Number of years in West Milford: 55 Statement: The school board is responsible for both 60 percent of our tax dollars and 90 percent of our children’s education. This presents huge problems for West Milford in these difficult financial times. I believe it also presents great opportunities for the people of West Milford to come together to fix our problem and make West Milford a place we can all be proud of again. Spending more money won’t solve the problem but old-fashioned hard work and dedication of our citizens will. We have many who are willing to contribute their time to educating our children and maintaining our building; retired teachers, builders, technicians, senior citizens, and college students, All we have to do is ask. If elected to the West Milford School Board this Tuesday, April 21, my goal will be that we start believing in ourselves again. Barbara Carter Age: 56 Education: graduate of University of Pennsylvania Occupation: Teacher Family information: Not provided Number of years in West Milford: 29 Statement: It’s time for some fiscal responsibility in West Milford. There is too much waste and not enough oversight in the school district. The average school district in New Jersey devotes 63 percent of its budget to salaries and benefits. West Milford pays 68 percent. That costs the taxpayers an extra three million dollars a year. There is a myth that either you want fiscal responsibility or you want to give our students a good education. The truth is that if we don’t cut down on the waste, we will be forced to have larger classes for our children. We need to check every receipt and question every payment. We owe that to the taxpayers and we owe that to the children.
