WEST MILFORD Commercial pilot and flight instructor Harold “Hal” Botsford once said, “If I could do it all over, I couldn’t afford it.” He was referring to the high cost of flight training and certification. When Hal died in a plane crash nearly two years ago, his family decided to set up a “Gift of Wings” fund to provide money to one local and one national applicant. This money may be used for sky rides, flight lessons, or the pursuit of a new rating. On Friday, December 1, the 2006 winners were announced. Anthony Stevens and John Palishen were awarded with framed certificates and checks by Alison Botsford, Hal’s daughter. The picture printed on each certificate is a rare photo of Hal that will only be used on the annual “Gift of Wings” award. The ceremony was held inside the Constellation, a permanently anchored plane at Greenwood Lake airport. Accepting the grant on behalf of John Palishen, who was taking finals at Florida Institute of Technology, was his sister Melanie. Guest speakers included Robert Miranda, a student and longtime friend of Hal, and Jay Dougherty, Hal’s student and 2005 winner of the Gift of Wings grant. Essays were submitted from aspirants nationwide, describing the reasons why each should receive a “Gift of Wings” grant. The essays were judged by Miranda and members of the Botsford family. Anthony’s essay was chosen as the local winner. He has recently received his solo license, and plans to use the money on additional flight training. John was awarded the national grant, and will also spend his money on flight training. For more information on the “Gift of Wings” grant or to submit an essay for 2007, visit www.giftofwings.org.
