WEST MILFORD — “What’s a hidden hero?” asked a third grade student at St. Joseph School recently. “A hidden hero is someone who sacrifices all their comforts to work for the good of others and they do it in a quiet way without many others knowing about it,” answered Sr. Nancy Richter of The Catholic Church Extension Society. She was in the school to explain her group’s mission. The Catholic Church Extension Society is a ministry that exists to sustain and extend the Catholic faith in poor and remote areas of the United States where diocesan resources are insufficient. It builds national awareness and raises funds for the Catholic evangelization. Sr. Nancy shared a story about her one of her favorite hidden heroes, Sr. Laura. Born and raised in the Bronx, Sr. Laura’s family and friends were surprised when she told them she felt God was calling her to do missionary work in Northern Montana. Since then, she has faithfully continued her work with Native American families in that area for 26 years. Last year she celebrated a water pump being installed outside of her small trailer. Prior to that, she traveled daily to collect water in buckets and then boil it. Sr. Nancy showed a video that outlined the ministries serving those in the deep south, Alaska and other remote areas. In these areas sometimes people celebrate Mass in unusual places — movie theatres, rented homes and even from the back of a truck.
