HEWITT — Laurie Cerruti was minding her business when she heard herself paged over the intercom. She manages the health and beauty aids at the A & P in Hewitt and was called to the floral counter. Before she got there she was paged again. There, standing among the displays of flowers was a man-form wrapped from head to shin in Christmas paper. Even though only his shoes and the bottom of his pant legs were visible, she recognized him immediately and burst into tears. It was US Marine Pvt. 1st Class Kyle Cerruti, her 19 year-old son. “It was a total surprise,” she said. Kyle, a High Point High School graduate, grew up in West Milford and spent most of his school years here. On September 11, 2001 he climbed up a mountain by his Moorestown Road home and could see the twin towers smoldering. “From that moment,” his mom said, “he was planning to join up.” He hasn’t been away from home long, having only left on August 1, but that’s all the more reason why Laurie didn’t expect to see him for quite some time. But he had a glitch in schedule which gave him a few days to get away from Camp LeJeune where he is stationed until February. After that, he will go overseas. When Kyle saw his opportunity to get home, he decided to surprise his mom. His friends Ian Murphy and J.J. Stobeling took care of him and wrapped him up for the big moment. Kyle is already back on base, as he returned on New Year’s Day. His mom is understandably nervous about the upcoming months. “I support him 100 percent,” she said. And then she talked about her fear for him. “Until President Bush sends one of his daughters over there, I can’t believe he has any idea what he is doing to families here.” Kyle and his family currently live in Wantage. He has an older sister and a younger brother. Mom Laurie has worked at the A & P for seven years.
