West Milford - “It’s been a long time coming.” That’s how Mayor Bettina Bieri responded to the news that the Mount Laurel Park project, which has been in the works for about five years, may finally be coming to an end. Keith Knudsen, the director of Community Services and Recreation Department for West Milford, said they are entering the final stage of the renovation and should be finished with the park sometime in the spring. He received the Township Council’s approval to move forward on the plan last week. “We are preparing the newly proposed skate park,” said Knudsen, adding that it could be completed in April if there are no delays. Knudsen said the skate park will be built with materials that will be less noisy than conventional materials. The equipment ideas came from a committee that was formed for the purpose of creating the skate park, as well as from kids. After the township’s insurance company reviewed the plans, only one piece of equipment was removed because of safety concerns. Knudsen did not have cost figures for the park, but Councilman Robert Nolan noted that they “spent way over” the original estimate. “Are we ready to move on with this?” asked Bieri. “I was ready two years ago,” answered Councilman Joseph Smolinski. “It is almost exactly what the kids wanted,” noted Knudsen. “I thank the council for letting me move forward on this.”
