WEST MILFORD Terence Corcoran, who was named temporary judge in West Milford early this year, has been chosen for the permanent position. The choice comes after a three-member panel interviewed at least 12 candidates for the position. Corcoran’s installment as the new judge is yet to go before the council, but it appears it will be little more than a formality at the council’s next meeting. However, prior to the decision being made, the Police Benevolent Association wrote a letter charging that Corcoran was too lenient and that would cause the police to write fewer summons, costing the municipality money. James Warden, one of the three interviewers along with Mayor Joseph DiDonato and Councilman Carmen Scangarello said, “We interviewed more than a dozen potential candidates. I am satisfied [with the selection] and I have no qualms in recommending him.” As municipal court Judge, Corcoran will attend to cases dealt with at the local level, which consist mainly of parking and motor offenses, and with other minor violations also under his remit. Corcoran is also the municipal judge for Totowa. In other business: Does West Milford need sprucing up? Well, if you think it does, you might have the opportunity to join in a competition to brighten up roadside areas throughout the town. Council member and Beautification Committee member Phil Weisbecker is promoting the idea on behalf of the committee members to encourage gardening professionals to bring a little color to areas lacking in floral adornment. Weisbecker said, “We are looking at ways to bring local landscapers, we have many, to take an intersection and it’s theirs. They can compete, and awards would be given out to the best looking intersection in town.” The last day to register for voting in the forthcoming elections is October 17. All applicants must complete the registration form by that date in order to receive a ballot to vote. To register, the Clerks Office in Town Hall will provide the forms and advice. The elections, including that for township council, will take place on Tuesday, November 7. The Autumn Lights Festival is here again and is packed with entertainment for all ages. It all starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday and will include live bands, kids games, carnival rides and a whole lot more. Honest Abe Lincoln intends to be there too at the West Milford Museum and, once you’ve had the chance to stop by and meet him, you can visit Greenwood Lake Airport and catch a quick flight. There’s also a motorcycle show at Pinecliff Lake Dam, a wine tasting at Wine in the Woods and Storytelling Tours at Long Pond Ironworks. The weather put a serious damper on last year’s festival but the forecast is for decidedly drier fare this time around. Visit the Town Hall to get maps and event schedules.
