WEST MILFORD Police Officer Carol Stelmach has filed suit against the West Milford Police Department, the Township of West Milford and a number of individual township and police employees. Stelmach alleges that the overwhelmingly male workforce treated her and her female counterparts condescendingly, and subjected her to constant reprimand and ridicule. She alleges that she was held to an entirely different standard than the other officers and that she was subject to and arbitrary set of rules that applied only to her. In the suit, Stelmach’s attorney Gina Mendola Langarzo describes the West Milford Police Department as a “sexually hostile work environment,” and specifies an incident of inappropriate touching on the firing range. In addition to the department and the township as responsible parties, Stelmach has also named Former Police Chief James Dykstra, along with Police John Matarese, David Hardin and Michael Coscia, Township Administrator Richard Kunze and Mayor Joseph DiDonato. The individuals are named, in part, because, according to Stelmach, complaints about the situation were not handled in an acceptable manner. Representatives from the police department and the township offices offered no comment on the suit. Stelmach, who lives in Sussex, began her career at the West Milford Police Department in 1999. She is still actively employed within the department.
