Passaic County Freeholders announce PowerUp Computer recipients

    West Milford — John Chapman, science/technology teacher in West Milford attended a recent freeholder meeting to take possession of 10 Gateway computers used in the after school and summer programs in the West Milford School district over the past three years. The program is open to 4-H Youth Development Programs in underserved areas (rural and urban) to help bridge the digital divide. The program is open to students in 4-H clubs. “PowerUP” is a not-for-profit corporation that provides computers, Internet accounts, and instructor training to assist under-served youth to obtain skills needed in the digital age. It was a three year program in collaboration with major corporation, non-profit organizations and government agencies. The PowerUP Youth Computer Enrichment program was also a partnership and collaborative effort between Rutgers Cooperative Research and Extension of Passaic County, the Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders, the Passaic County Community College, Passaic Housing Authority and the West Milford School District. Each site received 10 Gateway computers and 125 AOL accounts. Hewlett-Packard printers, Cisco system routers were installed and technical support and staff training provided for one year.
