West Milford The Wednesday morning before Thanksgiving a fire broke out at a house on Lebanon Road. No one was home at the time and two pets, a dog and a cat, died in the fire. Upper Greenwood Lake Company 5 (aka “The Fightin’ Fifth) responded and were assisted by Companies 3, 4 and 6. In addition, trucks from Highland Lakes and Ringwood were on the scene. According to Chief Peter McGuinness of Company 5, the blaze was under control in about an hour, but because it had gotten up underneath the roof, it took four to five hours to completely extinguish. He described it as a “stubborn fire.” One firefighter suffered a minor injury to his eye. McGuinness said the blaze was most likely caused by a wood stove in the kitchen. Although there was significant damage to half the house, the other portion is salvageable. The house was the home of Gaetano and Imma Russo and their three children.
