Police caution kids to wear helmets

WEST MILFORD — Beginning March 1, 2006 individuals who are under the age of 17 are required to wear approved helmets while riding a bicycle or utilizing in-line skates, roller skates, skateboards or non-motorized scooters. The West Milford Police are concerned that children and/or parents may not be aware of the new law. Flagrant disregard for the helmet safety law in the township has repeatedly been a topic at town council meetings in the past few months. The police are now aggressively enforcing these laws, and will continue to do so. In addition will pass out informational brochures to youths stopped for not wearing a helmet. The police will be working with the Township’s Department of Parks and Recreation on an educational program for parents and children regarding helmet use. The department recently issued a press release stating, “bicycle helmet law is a direct result of a common sense approach to protecting our children. The tragedy of severe and sometimes debilitating head injuries can be prevented by the use of approved and properly worn helmets.”
