WEST MILFORD — The West Milford Police have developed a presentation on the nature and prevention of identity theft as well as guidelines if someone finds themselves a victim of the crime. Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in the United States. About 10 million people are victims of identity theft each year, resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars stolen from those victims and financial institutions each year. This hour-long program was presented on Monday, Aug. 28, to an audience at Grange Hall in Bald Eagle Commons. Capt. Andrew Russo and Lt. Timothy Storbeck presented the program. Councilman Joe Smolinski was instrumental in promoting it. Chief Paul Costello, who was the catalyst of the program, was in attendance and made the opening remarks. The presentation was followed by a question and answer period. Response from the audience was overwhelmingly favorable, and in light of that reaction, the program is going to be offered to the rest of the township. Dates and times will be advertised as they are scheduled. If any member of a civic or community group is interested in hosting this presentation for your organization, contact the West Milford Police at 973-728-2802 and ask for Capt. Andrew Russo or Lt. Timothy Storbeck.
