WEST MILFORD A local police officer who has a suit pending against the West Milford Department is now alleging that one of her fellow officers poisoned her dog. Officer Carol Stelmach filed suit against the department, the township and a number of individuals for sexual harassment and discrimination. Stelmach, who has worked in the department since 1999, filed the suit in November of 2005. In it, she claims there were numerous incidents of inappropriate and suggestive behavior toward her which resulted in a hostile work environment. In addition, she alleges that when she reported the behavior she was harassed further and that her superiors did not act on the complaints in a reasonable way. Last weekend, Stelmach’s dog was allegedly poisoned and Stelmach believes that one of her fellow officers is responsible. In a letter from Stelmach’s attorney, Gina Mendola Longarzo, to current Police Chief Paul Costello, dated Jan. 31, Longarzo requested a full Internal Affairs Investigation into the matter. The letter also mentions that Stelmach’s car has been repeatedly “keyed” since she filed suit and implies officers might have been involved. Costello is not personally named in the suit, nor was he in the chief’s position during any of the time periods described in the suit. When asked for comment, Costello said, “We investigate any and all allegations of police misconduct. Other than that I can’t comment on any specific internal investigation.” Stelmach and her attorney have requested a trial by jury. The case will probably come before the court in 2007.
