West Milford — A Denville woman is under arrest after crashing her car, refusing police instructions and then fleeing the scene. Heather A. Devenuto, 35, allegedly struck a guide rail on Echo Lake Road on Jan. 5 just after 3 p.m. Police received a report of the motor vehicle crash and that the driver might be having a medical emergency, according to police Lt. John C. Matarese. It appeared to officers on the scene that Devenuto may have been under the influence of some substance. The driver refused to comply with officers' instructions to exit the vehicle. Instead, she fled in her 2005 Honda Pilot. Matarese and officers Jason Lowenfeld and Nick Snook pursued the vehicle as it headed east on Echo Lake Road and then north on Macopin. It was stopped on Macopin road after it struck another vehicle and a patrol car. Devenuto was taken into custody and placed under arrest. In the process she bit Officer Andrew Petrucelli in the arm. She is charged with driving while intoxicated, resisting arrest, aggravated assault on a police officer, eluding a law enforcement officer and numerous motor vehicle violations. Bail was set by Judge Joseph Perconti at $25,000. Devenuto was remanded to Passaic County Jail, Paterson.
