Report calls for new library

WEST MILFORD — According to Library Director Patricia Hannon, the library outgrew the space it occupies a couple of decades ago. To make matters worse, sometime in the early 1990s the fire regulations changed, which made the basement rooms no longer legal for use. The board of directors commissioned a study to find out how the community felt about the current library, what they wanted from their library and how much space was reasonable to provide modern library services. The consultants worked with several focus groups and presented their report on Monday. They found that the library was inadequate, but the staff and their work are highly regarded. They said the last referendum probably failed due to a lack of communication. However, they also said taxes are a stumbling block the board would have to confront. The consultants recommended a new nearly 24,000-square-foot building that would include several meeting rooms, the circulation area and some work space. There was no cost analysis with the report. Board President Eugene Valanta said the report was “a comprehensive, statistical analysis that clearly points out that the present facility is very inadequate and there is a glaring need for a larger improved facility in order to provide the services to which the public is entitled.” Board Member John Aiello agrees with the fact that a new library is desperately needed, but felt that the 23,905 square feet recommended was way too large. Aiello feels that a building about half that size would be adequate and that it should be built without a bond. “We could do it with fundraising and by having people donate their time and materials to build it.” Hannon agreed with the conclusions of the report and said that it was important to look 20 years into the future so that tax payers aren’t burdened with something they outgrow in ten years. The report, she said, was in line with the state and national standards. She was skeptical about the practicality of Aiello’s idea.
