WEST MILFORD When West Milford resident Marie Rem agreed to help coordinate a walkathon for Cerebral Palsy of North Jersey’s Horizon School last year, the organizers were hopeful of surpassing the $7,000 mark set the year before. They succeeded, raising over $11,000. This year, the event was expanded to include the agency’s new Horizon High School and it proved the most successful event yet. The “Wheelin’-n’-Walkin’ Challenge” raised more than $34,000, becoming one of the organization’s largest and most successful fundraisers. The event was designed to allow staff, students and their families to help raise funds for the two schools, which serve more than 130 students with multiple disabilities. Each student secures sponsors and on the day of the event, everyone does one lap around their school. Students with wheelchairs, walkers and gait trainers are assisted by family members, volunteers or staff. Each classroom also does their own fundraiser to raise additional dollars. “Marie has been able to help grow this into a true community event,” said Bruce Kleinman, President of Cerebral Palsy of North Jersey’s Board of Trustees. “She did a wonderful job in helping to harness the energy, talent and enthusiasm of our staff members to help support the programs at our schools.”
